Al Bumbry was the American League Rookie of the Year in 1973. We posed for a picture in July of that year at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, and reunited at the same spot 48 years later where an apartment complex now stands.. When asked about his memories of Opening Day, Al said all 12 as an Oriole (1973-84) were special. But the most memorable was when he returned to Baltimore on Opening Day 1989 wearing an enemy uniform as a coach for the Boston Red Sox. There’s only one day each year when every player and coach on both teams gets introduced to the crowd… Opening Day! Bumbry got just as thunderous a welcome as hometown heroes Cal Ripken Jr. and manager Frank Robinson. He says the Red Sox players couldn’t believe it!
